Ponder for a second…what medicine did our ancestors take to feel better? What food did they eat? There were no pharmacies hundreds of thousands of years ago. There were no grocery stores. The planet we live on has always provided us with what we needed. We worked in harmony with nature. We woke up when the sun rose and we went to sleep when it set. We knew the land we lived on, the animals that lived with us, the plants that grew, what was safe to consume and what wasn’t. Because of that knowledge and connection we worked for a living. We literally took care of ourselves (and the earth we walked upon) to survive. Things are a lot different nowadays. We are neither in touch with nature nor ourselves the way we used to be. We work for someone else so that we can pay someone else for the things we need. I am not saying that is wrong, that is just what most of us do to survive in these times.

I just want you to know there a lot more options than what we are being conditioned to. If you look closer you might notice other options appear. Instead of grocery stores there used to be and still are farmers markets or stands. The produce at farmers markets is much better quality as the farmers pick what is ripe, so the produce is at its highest nutritional value. Depending on the farmer you might even have a selection of organic produce that has not been sprayed or grown with pesticides or herbicides (Which we didn’t even have to worry about hundreds of years ago).

While you’re at a farmers market you might even find plant or herbal medicines. Herbal remedies have been used for over thousands of years. Apothecaries or medicine men/women existed before pharmacies. There were people who knew the medicinal plants in the region and they would harvest the plants and know how to use them as medicine. Whether you had a fever, a cough, a wound, a stomachache, trouble sleeping, or feelings of anxiety or depression, the herbalist would know what to give you to feel better. Herbalists still exist. There is a myriad of medicinal and edible plants that exist throughout your town, your state, your country, and the world.

When you purchase herbal medicine or organic produce from your community members, not only are you supporting yourself with better quality food and medicine, you are supporting local and small businesses. I keep in mind the intention of the creator of whatever product I am spending my money on. I also pay attention to the ingredients that products are made with for my own health as well as the earth’s health. The new inventions of todays times (food products, beauty products, prescription pills, supplements, etc.) can be great. Many are resourceful or convenient. Ask yourself though, why would something be created if there were already a safe, reliable, and sustainable source made from nature?

I am not a licensed physician, so my role does not include diagnosing or treating disease; therefore I do not practice medicine. Instead my role includes educating, supporting, and informing you with such options to aid you along your holistic health journey.
